WARD 1 IN KWAXIMBA TO REMAIN UNDER ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY
EThekwini Municipality together with the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) held a community meeting at KwaXimba Community Hall in Ward 1 recently to provide clarity on the outcome of litigation affecting eThekwini Municipality and Mkhambathini Municipality.
The meeting formed part of the process to finalise the 2024/25 municipal ward delimitation process.
Both parties agreed that the municipal boundary between Mkhambathini Municipality and eThekwini Municipality will remain unchanged, effectively retaining the 2021 municipal boundary status quo.
In compliance with the agreement, the Municipal Demarcation Board withdrew its earlier decision, meaning that the area previously earmarked to fall under Mkhambathini Municipality will not be affected.
Ward 1 Councillor and Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee Councillor Thembo Ntuli expressed satisfaction with the MDB’s decision, noting that the fire station in Cato Ridge will remain under the jurisdiction of eThekwini Municipality.
MDB KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Coordinator Mthobisi Manzini said the Board followed all ward delimitation criteria by using voting districts as building blocks for the creation of wards.
“We aim to create identifiable ward boundaries using clear geographical features such as roads, rivers, mountains and valleys. It is also important that we avoid splitting voting districts and maintain existing ward numbers where possible,” said Manzini.
He further indicated that a provincial gazette will be published on 24 March.
Community members and stakeholders who are aggrieved by the ward demarcation as published in the gazette will have 14 days from the date of publication to submit objections.
