UPDATE ON REPAIRS TO DAMAGED VALVE AT NAGLE DAM AND IMPACT ON WATER SUPPLY
EThekwini Municipality wishes to update residents and businesses regarding the temporary shortfall in water normally supplied by uMngeni-uThukela Water for treatment and distribution across the City.
On 11 March 2026, the City’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water reported damage to a valve at Nagle Dam.
This incident disrupted the supply of raw water to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, which provides treated water to several areas across both the northern and southern regions of the Municipality.
The bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water, which is responsible for the repair work, has confirmed that the damaged valves have now been successfully repaired.
This marks a critical step toward restoring normal operations within the eThekwini water supply system.
As a result, the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works will be able to operate at full treatment capacity from tomorrow, 16 March 2026.
This will allow the plant to process the maximum volume of water and begin replenishing the broader distribution network.
However, while treatment capacity will be restored, the full recovery of the reticulation system will take time.
The stabilisation and replenishment of reservoirs and pipelines across the network is expected to take up to two weeks.
To support system recovery, the Municipality, working in collaboration with uMngeni-uThukela Water, has implemented a system stabilisation and water rationing plan aimed at restoring stability to the water supply network.
Under the temporary rationing plan currently being implemented across affected systems and reservoirs, some consumers will receive water during the morning only, while others will receive water during both the morning and afternoon until the system stabilises.
These measures are temporary and are intended to restore stability to the network as quickly as possible while minimising widespread outages.
