TRADING SERVICES COMMITTEE CONDUCTS OVERSIGHT VISITS TO LANDFILL SITES
EThekwini Municipality’s Trading Services Committee today conducted oversight visits to two landfill sites as part of its governance and accountability responsibilities.
Shongweni Landfill Site
The Committee visited the Shongweni Landfill Site, which is currently under construction by the Municipality.
Once completed, the site is expected to serve the City for over 90 years.
Deputy Head of the Waste Management Directorate, Logan Moodley, said the development of the landfill site follows extensive negotiations and compliance with all legislative requirements.
“We are pleased with the progress made. Phase one is 85 percent complete, while phase two is at 17 percent,” said Moodley.
He added that the landfill site will include monitoring systems for landfill gas and leachate, and that all biodiversity and environmental regulations have been adhered to in order to ensure coexistence with surrounding communities.
Provision will also be made for waste recyclers handling various recyclable materials.
“Access road rehabilitation has been completed. In future, the site will integrate advanced waste management solutions such as rubble treatment, energy recovery, and composting,” he said.
The Shongweni Landfill Site is expected to become operational in 2028 and will help ease pressure on existing landfill sites.
Deputy Chairperson of the Trading Services Committee, Councillor Ayanda Ndlovu, emphasised the importance of oversight in ensuring accountability and effective service delivery.
“The Committee will continue to conduct oversight visits to other landfill sites to ensure optimal operations,” she said.
Buffelsdraai Landfill Site
The Committee also visited the Buffelsdraai Landfill Site, located in Verulam, which serves as a general waste disposal facility for the central to northern regions of the Municipality.
The site has an estimated remaining lifespan of 30 years.
The facility had previously been damaged by arson attacks but has since undergone full rehabilitation and resumed operations in February 2025.
Director of the Waste Management Directorate, Noluthando Magewu, said a report will be submitted to the Committee to secure additional capital budget.
She added that ongoing innovations within the Directorate continue to receive national recognition.
“We are working hard to ensure consistent waste collection services across all areas,” she said.
The Waste Management Directorate recently received three awards at this year’s National Waste Management Awards for:
* Demonstrating commitment to promoting waste-to-energy initiatives
* Innovation in the built environment through construction and demolition waste programmes
* Most improved metropolitan municipal landfill site operation and management
