PUBLIC URGED TO EXERCISE CAUTION AS LEVEL 1 DAMAGING WAVES WARNING ISSUED
EThekwini Municipality urges residents and visitors to remain vigilant following a Level 1 Weather Warning for Damaging Waves issued by the South African Weather Service and is valid from Monday, 27 April at 10:00 until Wednesday, 29 April at 23:59.
A combination of a cold front and a strong ridging high‑pressure system is expected to result in wave heights of between 4 and 5 metres along the KwaZulu‑Natal coastline.
The warning affects coastal and near‑coastal areas within EThekwini and surrounding regions.
Residents are advised that these conditions may lead to difficult navigation at sea, temporary disruption at small harbours and ports, and localised damage to coastal infrastructure.
There is also a risk of disrupted beach activities, while small vessels are particularly vulnerable and may be at risk of taking on water or capsising in certain areas.
The public is strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary activities at sea and along the coastline during this period.
Beachgoers, anglers, surfers and recreational water users are advised to remain vigilant and to follow all safety guidance issued by authorities.
Operators of small boats are urged to delay launching until conditions improve.
The Municipality’s emergency services teams are on high alert, monitoring the situation closely, in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official municipal communication channels and to report any emergencies to the relevant response services immediately.
The Municipality calls on all residents to take this warning seriously and to act responsibly to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
