MORE THAN 1 000 HOMES IN THE PIPELINE FOR FLOOD VICTIMS
EThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba has expressed confidence in the City’s accelerated efforts to house flood victims, with over 1 000 units expected to be ready for occupation by June.
His optimism follows a recent visit to the Cornubia Housing Development Project, where more than 113 houses are currently under construction as part of over 1 200 units earmarked to accommodate flood victims.
Of these, 103 units are expected to be completed by the end of March this year, with the remaining units scheduled for completion in the next financial year.
The City will also construct more than 400 Temporary Residential Units in the area to accommodate residents currently living in Temporary Emergency Accommodation and transit camps, while construction at Cornubia continues.
“There is also a process underway to finalise the refurbishment of 500 units at Montclair Lodge. I am optimistic that by June this year, we will have more than 1 000 units available to accommodate people who are currently in temporary emergency accommodation,” said Mayor Xaba.
While construction progresses at Cornubia, the Municipality is accelerating the connection of units to basic services such as water, sanitation, and electricity to ensure beneficiaries can move in without delay.
Mayor Xaba expressed his enthusiasm about the project, noting that it will significantly alleviate the challenges faced by residents displaced by floods.
In addition to assisting flood victims, the broader Cornubia Housing Project caters to three categories of beneficiaries: social housing for rental, RDP houses, and first home finance subsidy beneficiaries.
The total projected yield of the Cornubia Project is 25 000 units.
As part of the infrastructure upgrade programme in the area, the Municipality is also constructing road infrastructure to support the integrated public transport network.
Other social amenities developed in line with government’s programme of building sustainable human settlements include a school, community hall, trading stalls, sports facilities, and a clinic.
