MAYOR XABA COMMITS TO FAST-TRACKING SERVICE DELIVERY TO PEOPLE OF SOUTHERN AREAS
Residents from the southern parts of the eThekwini Municipality had an opportunity to express their views on the 2026/27 IDP-Budget Consultation held at uMnini Sports Ground on 6 May.
Residents from ward 67,76, 89, 90,93,94,95,96,97,98,99 100 and 109 attended the IDP-Budget Consultation process to also hear about service delivery programmes planned by the Municipality and a proposed R74.7 billion budget.
EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, said the City had plans to cushion residents from the current hard economic outlook.
“Residential properties valued up to R350 000 will be exempted from paying rates. A further allowance will be afforded on application to all owners of residential properties with a total household income of R7 000 and less and those with properties valued between R350 000 and R750 000,” said Mayor Xaba.
He added that the first six kilolitres of water would be free to properties valued under R350 000.
Residential property valued up to R350 000 would be exempted from paying domestic refuse removal tariff.
Residents in rural areas, informal settlements and non-kerbside benefited from free refuse removal service.
The following are some of the massive service delivery projects that will be undertaken in the wards:
* Ward 89 road upgrade from gravel to tar has been allocated R9 million
* Ward 90 reconstruction of electricity substation has been allocated R70 million
* Ward 95 housing construction project at a cost of R1.2 million
* Ward 98 Ilovu Landfill site budget allocation of R36.1 million
* Ward 105, three water projects worth R12 million
Mayor Xaba said the Municipality would attend to all complaints from residents.
“We will work hard to eradicate transit camps in the City. We will respond to service delivery complaints and implement water-related projects, unblock drainage systems, housing construction and waste management,” said Mayor Xaba.
He said the Municipality was hard at work to create job opportunities through investment opportunities that are being created.
“We are attracting businesses to invest billions of rands in the City in a bid to generate more revenue that will be ploughed back to service delivery,” Mayor Xaba said.
