FAKE NEWS: OUTDATED AUDIO CLIP CIRCULATING REGARDING WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION AT WIGGINS WATER TREATMENT WORKS
EThekwini Municipality wishes to alert residents and businesses to the circulation of an outdated recorded message, originally produced in 2025, which is currently being shared on social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp, as if it were a recent announcement.
The recording refers to a planned maintenance shutdown of the Wiggins Water Treatment Works scheduled for 8 April. The Municipality would like to categorically clarify:
• This information is not current.
• There is no planned shutdown of the Wiggins Water Treatment Works on 8 April 2026.
• The audio clip was recorded and issued last year when uMngeni-uThukela Water conducted maintenance that temporarily affected eThekwini reservoirs.
The resurfacing and circulation of this outdated message has caused unnecessary concern, panic and confusion among the public.
We strongly urge residents and businesses to verify all information through official municipal communication channels before sharing it further.
