ETHEKWINI LAUNCHES TSHALA NATHI SKILLS PROGRAMME FOR WOMEN FARMERS
In a drive to empower and support women in agriculture, eThekwini Municipality has launched the Tshala Nathi 12-month Skills Development Programme, aimed at developing young women farmers across the region.
The programme provides participants with market access and funding support, technical and financial training, sustainable farming guidance, and structured mentorship, enabling them to establish and grow successful, resilient farming enterprises.
Women who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to attend the regional information and registration roadshows scheduled as follows:
12 February | 10:00 – UMbumbulu Community Hall (Sizakala Centre)
17 February | 10:00 – Bester Hall, KwaMashu
18 February | 10:00 – KwaMagaba Hall, Hammarsdale
Application criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
-Women aged between 18 to 35 years
-Access to at least one hectare of securely fenced land
-Functional irrigation infrastructure
-A minimum of two years’ farming experience.

The City’s Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, said the programme reflects the Municipality’s commitment to youth development, women empowerment, and sustainable agriculture.
“The Tshala Nathi Programme forms part of eThekwini Municipality’s broader commitment to empowering young women and promoting sustainable agriculture. By supporting women farmers, we aim to strengthen food security, promote economic inclusion, and grow a thriving agricultural sector within the region.”
Councillor Ntuli added: “We are committed to nurturing the next generation of female farmers by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to succeed. We encourage eligible women to seize this opportunity and apply.”
