ETHEKWINI HANDS OVER NEW HOMES TO SIX FAMILIES IN WARD 103
The eThekwini Municipality continues to demonstrate its commitment to delivering decent housing to poor and rural communities across the City.
Six deserving beneficiaries received the keys to their brand new homes during a handover ceremony held in Ward 103, under the leadership of Councillor Linda Mchunu.
The emotional handover brought relief and excitement to families who had endured difficult living conditions for many years.
One beneficiary, Nompumelelo Sibisi, expressed gratitude to the Municipality for fulfilling its promise of restoring dignity to vulnerable residents.
“I have endured a leaking roof for years. Today, I am happy because I will finally sleep peacefully in a safe and beautiful house. I am also excited that I now officially own the house after receiving my title deed,” said Sibisi.
The housing handover forms part of the broader Qiniselani Manyuswa Phase 2 Rural Housing Project, which is set to significantly accelerate the delivery of quality housing to residents in Wards 2 and 103.
Following a comprehensive report submitted to the Human Settlements, Engineering and Transport Committee, the Municipality approved measures to align the project budget with modern construction standards to ensure that 750 families receive dignified and high-quality homes.
The strategic adjustment includes an increase in contract authority for six appointed contractors.
Each contractor, responsible for constructing 125 housing units, will receive an additional allocation of approximately R4.2 million, bringing the revised contract value to more than R23 million.
The increased funding follows the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements’ decision to raise housing subsidy quantums in response to rising construction and labour costs.
The move is aimed at preventing delays and ensuring uninterrupted progress on site.
