DEPUTY MINISTER IN THE PRESIDENCY TO LEAD PROVINCIAL GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT STRATEGY ROADSHOW
EThekwini Municipality will tomorrow, 20 May, welcome the Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Seiso Mohai, who will lead the Geospatial Information Management Strategy (GIMS) Roadshow at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre tomorrow.
The roadshow, hosted in collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal Government and eThekwini Municipality, marks the first provincial rollout of the strategy and will serve as a model for future engagements across the country.
The GIMS was initiated by the National Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation under the Chief Directorate Spatial Planning, and was launched nationally in September last year.
The strategy establishes a policy framework for spatial governance and coordinated geospatial data management.
The strategy aims to strengthen evidence-based planning, data interoperability, and enhance spatial monitoring of development outcomes.
The Provincial GIMS roadshows represent the next step of taking the strategy from policy to practice.
This provincial GIMS roadshow aims to:
• Institutionalise and operationalise the GIMS across all government spheres;
• Build awareness and technical capacity among provincial and municipal stakeholders;
• Strengthen geospatial data governance, interoperability, and the use of geospatial evidence for decision-making; and promote integration of geospatial data into national monitoring and evaluation systems.
The programme will include strategic remarks, provincial and municipal case studies, a live demonstration of the DPME Geospatial Enabled Dashboard and geospatial tools as well an interactive question and answer session.
The programme will bring together various stakeholders that include executive leadership of national, provincial and local government; technical experts, business and private sector partners and representatives from academic institutions.
