CITY TO LAUNCH MUSICAL THEATRE PRODUCTION DEVELOPING LOCAL CREATIVES
EThekwini Municipality will premiere Amandla Phumelela tomorrow evening, 7 August a bold new local musical theatre production developed through the city's Theatre Residency Programme.
The production comes after the city's public call for auditions, which invited aspiring actors, writers and directors, and in which scores of young creatives from various parts of the city participated to demonstrate their talent.
Sixteen young creatives who demonstrated excellent acting abilities, stage presence and powerful vocal performances reached the finals and were selected to form the Municipality's first Theatre Residency.
The production officially opens at 6pm and performances will run until 16 August at The Stable Theatre. Entrance is free.
Amandla Phumelela, a powerful musical that explores the realities confronting many young South Africans, is written and directed by Jerry Pooe, with choreography by Sfiso Mathibela. Through storytelling, music and drama, the production tackles issues such as substance abuse, abandonment, identity, and the search for love, purpose and belonging, while delivering a message of hope, resilience and transformation.
Director of Recreation and Parks, Dr Simphiwe Ndlovu, said this talent development programme is designed to equip emerging artists with the skills and opportunities needed to build sustainable careers in the performing arts. "Members of the cast are now receiving mentorship from industry professionals, theatre training and access to performance opportunities that will strengthen their artistic development and prepare them for the professional theatre environment," said Ndlovu.

By investing in emerging artists, the Municipality continues to position Durban as a vibrant hub for artistic excellence and cultural innovation.
